In most situations, I do not recommend buying gift cards for kids.  I do have my reasons for saying this.  Some children do like being able to go shopping with gift cards.  However, if the child has a birthday party and all they get is gift cards, they will not get much excitement in opening their gifts.
Most of the excitement at the Childs birthday party is the time leading up to the opening of gifts and the actual time opening the gifts.  I believe that a great deal of excitement is lost when most of the gifts are given in gift cards.  I recommend that you purchase actual gifts for children that you know well.  If you live out of town and will not be attending the party or if you do not know the child very well, a gift card does make a great gift.

If you are concerned with spending too much money, you can purchase gifts for kids online.  Making purchases online allows you to find great some deals and save cash.  So, if you are thinking about buying gift cards for kids you may want to consider how many other people may show up for the party with gift cards.  You don't want to kill the excitement of the childs party by being one of those parents that just took the easy way out when selecting his or her gift.
